Body-safe materials explained

Not every shiny toy is body-safe. Here is how to read materials labels and clean what you buy.

Material quality is the foundation of sexual wellness products. If it touches mucous membranes, it should be non-porous, stable, and easy to sanitize.

Silicone

High-quality silicone is soft, durable, and non-porous when properly cured. Use water-based lubricant with silicone toys — silicone lube can degrade the surface.

Glass and steel

Borosilicate glass and surgical-grade stainless steel are non-porous, temperature- play friendly, and simple to clean. They feel firmer; that firmness is a feature, not a flaw.

What to treat carefully

Jelly, TPR/TPE blends, and unlabeled “silicone feel” plastics can be porous. If you use them, always add a condom barrier and replace them sooner.

Cleaning basics

Wash before and after use with mild soap and warm water (or a toy cleaner). Follow the maker’s guidance for waterproofing — never soak a motor that is not fully waterproof.
